PS1 can simulate the entire FMC preflight procedure with position and performance initialization, thrust pre-programming with assumed temperature derates etc., takeoff planning such as CG /greenband calculation, runway position shift, and so on. Version 1.3 of Precision Simulator has also got a completely new VNAV program. The vertical flight path guidance is now extremely smooth and accurate. PS1 models all the navigation tools like “Direct To...”, “Intercept Leg To...”, “Via Airway... To...”, “Along Route Waypoints” etc. as well as fix info circles and bearings, holding patterns and many other functions. The overall look and feel of the simulated FMC/CDU is very realistic (CRT blanking, delayed rebuilding etc.). As usual in PS1, everything is running in real time in line with a smooth harmonic aerodynamics model. Besides, for time acceleration purposes, the simulator allows the user also to “skip” enroute waypoints - with time and fuel variables automatically corrected (please note: like in full-flight simulators, a “continuous” time acceleration is not possible due to the enormous complexity of the aircraft systems simulations).

Limitations in version 1.3: FANS (Future Air Navigation System using GPS and ACARS) is not included (FANS is a relatively new option - until now, airlines have introduced FANS only partially, or not at all, yet).

Full-scale Control Display Unit

Precision Simulator 1.3 provides a “pop up” Control Display Unit (CDU). The CDU keys can be accessed through the mouse or through the PC keyboard. Note: The PC keyboard can always be used to handle the CDU, whether the CDU keys are visible or not.

Sample screen shots: FMC functions

“Cold and dark” cockpit. Standby Power AUTO, Battery ON. The MENU page is initially displayed (the blue “SIMU” key opens a simulator specific page.)

The database identifiers on the IDENT page are checked. The IRS alignment may be started.

Position Initialization page. Map shift may occur if the position entered by the pilot during IRS alignment is not correct. Note: The duration of the alignment process can be shortended by pressing a certain button on the Instructor’s Page.

Brief overview: Other FMC pages

Position Init and Reference pages.

Take-off and climb thrust limit.

Reference Nav Data. Init/Ref Index.

Fix Info and ETA/ALT predictions.

Performance Initialization.

Take-off references.

Thrust limit. VREF selection.

Progress pages, 1/2 and 2/2.

Note: The selection of a particular unit (EPR or N1, KGS or LBS and other units) is automatic, depending on the airline configuration selected on the Instructor’s Page.
